Hello my friends!! Long time no see! Unfortunately I have been updating my Facebook page more regularly than here, and blogging on the Lonny Blog each week has been taking the place of my little blog corner of the internet. But not for long, hopefully. I am just starting the process of updating my website and getting ready to sell prints and originals- yahoo! I hope to be hanging around here more, too. I've been wearing out my espadrilles this summer. My friend Jacqui brought back a few perfect pairs from Paris last year and I've been searching for something similar ever since. I found them a few weeks ago (at Urban Outfitters!!)

There is a tiny shop in my neighborhood called Les Toiles du Soleil which sells espadrilles and striped fabrics that look like candy. The company was founded 150 years ago and still makes the happiest fabrics in the traditional way. I might have to get a couple of the these dishtowels to brighten up my kitchen.

Hunt Slonem's studio is filled with birds and bird paintings. I want to live there. I saw his bird on The Selby.

Look at this MJ bag with birds! It looks like it was inspired by the man himself.

Speaking of bird prints, I almost bought this dress at a little boutique off Lafayette Street.

The first time I saw it I had just had a few Moscow Mules from Pravda around the corner, so I thought it best to revisit it with a clearer head if you know what I mean. The print is a knock off of the Miu Miu prints from Spring (which I LOVED). I ended up there the next day after brunch at Essex ...again with a not so clear head (I swear this is not the norm!) tried it on, and was disappointed that it was just 'eh'. Guess I will have to start stalking ebay for the real thing!

I love the home floor at Bergdorf's. It makes me so happy. Right off the escalator you have John Derian, then a little further down is Kelly Wearstler's little jewel box of a shop within the shop. When I was there last week, I fell in love with the beautiful and glamorous ceramics of Waylande Gregory. See it here. It's a little Klimt, a little deco, a little Hermes-ish. Amazing. You know when you find something that is just SO YOU and exactly what you wish you would have designed in your wildest creative dreams?? I bought this little jade colored box with orange dots and a gold cougar. It is insanely awesome and my new prized possession.

It inspired my little painting below, which in retrospect looks like fried eggs but could be a cute pattern in another color!

It was a beeeeaauutiful weekend in NY! I spent lots of time on the roof, walked around the Farmer's Market and the West Village, and had a few cocktails on the Lower East Side. A lovely weekend and I'm sad it's over. I've been buying the $3 bunches of daffodils at our corner deli-I can't get enough of them!

We're having the apartment painted this week and I can't even tell you how much thought was put into these 4 colors, so I hope it works out! We're taking a risk and painting our hallway black. Hm. Hope that works out too! I'm going for a Ryan Korban thing. All black and white and faded Persian rugs and lots of art in gilded frames thrown in.

We bought this chair for $45 (!!!) at a New Jersey antique store and had it reupholstered in a black and white awning stripe. We didn't even have to change the wood frame, it's kind of a distressed ivory. Now the hunt for a sofa begins...

The Hot Chocolate Festival at City Bakery takes place in February every year. Not that I need a reason to go to City Bakery. They have a new flavor every day, but I stick to classic, no marshmallow. Some people think it is so sweet and so thick that they can only have one per year. I have already been twice this week. Is it bad to forgo dinner for hot chocolate?

It was my birthday last week. I'm not sure how I feel about this. But I did get lots of chocolate which made it O.K. First, I went to Fatty Crab with Jen, Kathy, and Audra. The food was great and we ended dinner with the 'Fatty Bar', dark chocolate with chilis-SO GOOD!

Then Liz brought me some dark chocolate with Fleur de Sel from Mast Brothers. It's a Brooklyn chocolate factory run by two brothers. The chocolate was perfect, and the packaging was even better-beautiful handmade paper. THEN there was more chocolate from Jacqui when she, Karen, and Allison took me to lunch. THEN, cadbury creme eggs from my mom. I'm chocolate-ed out (in a good way). It's only once a year right?! (But then there's Valentine's day...and Easter....)

Fashion and Fitness worlds collide

On my way to the gym on Saturday, I saw Grace Coddington walking into a pilates studio in my neighborhood. I love her. If you have not seen the September Issue- I suggest you see it right away- Grace Coddington is hilarious and talented and the most entertaining part of the documentary.
THEN, while at the gym, I had a moment of fashion surreality when Francisco Costa (sitting on the leg raise machine) exclaims "Hi Marc!", at which point Marc Jacobs walks over and says-"Oh hi I didn't see you there!" kiss kiss. Then my head exploded from fashion icon overload.

To the left is our tree-our first tree! Sadly it is starting to shed it's needles. My husband insists that this is because I don't fill the stand with boiling hot water {sigh}. To the right is the tree at our hotel in St. Lucia. They wrapped it in red and green tulle. It was very pretty actually-maybe next year we'll experiment! Merry Christmas!

Dinner Party

My mom's cousin Brigid and her husband Winfred threw a dinner party in our honor last weekend in their cozy, quirky, seemingly styled by Wes Anderson apartment that bumps up against the Chelsea Hotel.
The apartment is filled with artifacts from their extensive travels and loads of books, mirrors, and artwork. And it has a fireplace!! Brigid served Coq au Vin and lots of champagne.
And for dessert, a chocolate cake...in the shape of a wolf's head, complete with bloody fangs. It was delicious. We didn't ask questions. The perfect end to a lovely evening.

I lived at the Vintage Show this weekend. I went not once, not twice, but THREE times (I am indecisive, and it's right in my 'hood, so it's really not that bad.) I was on a mission and the show definitely delivered! I got accessories for the wedding which I won't talk about yet in case it is bad luck! I did get my mom her earrings for the wedding though...1950's chandeliers. Sooo cute.

I saw some great characters, including on Friday a drag queen sort of in half drag, including purple spandex leggings and a t-shirt with a stuffed bra. Then on Saturday he was in full drag with blonde bouffant wig. Then I saw this woman below- with a chic gray bob and a pillbox teetering on her head.

Someone told me no more shoe posts. I can't help it. Especially since I've discovered an amazing source where I purchased these two gems. Ok- I did not discover it. I've just never been there. It's on 18th and 7th and I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Just don't tell anyone else about it. And if you see a pair of Vera Wang Lavender Label perfect silk nude flats in a 6 and 1/2, please hide them for me.

Goodbye Summer

The weather is suddenly unbelievably gorgeous, but this weekend it's goodbye Summer. And goodbye to my Pierre Hardy for the Gap sandals which have seen better days. They have served me well but it's time to toss them. Other New Yorkers can attest that with all the walking, you're lucky if shoes don't fall apart after one summer. I wore these for two summers so it's about that time. On to ballet flats and boots!

It was the middle of the week, and I was all set to go home and get some painting in. Then Chris said, let's try Monkey Bar for a drink. Twist my arm. I drank Whiskey Sours because it seemed like the right thing to do.
Then I saw Thom Browne in all his wee-suited glory. I couldn't resist a little homage in the form of an illustration.

Philharmonic

I went to the Philharmonic in Central Park last week on what was probably the most beautiful night of the year. What a mob scene! The crowd was so large that people tied balloons to their spots so their friends could find them. I guess this a common phenomenon, but new to me since this was my first time there. Tons escaped into the sky.
I liked the music but I have to say what impressed me most was the gorgeous feast everyone packed: baguettes with brie..lots of fresh figs..and wine and champagne in real glasses. Some people ate by candlelight too. I was a little more low end with a veg sandwich, trail mix, and rose in a plastic cup. The ambiance was just as nice though!

This past weekend was Memorial day at the Beach. We had a ton of seafood and I made white sangria. My brother's girlfriend and I drank a good portion of a huge pitcher in a matter of hours.
The weekend before went to the Berkshires where I was amazed by the amount of lilacs everywhere. Chris's mom told me that the deep purple ones are called "French Twins" since they share a stem. She sent me home with the huge bunch of the light purple, which have such a strong amazing scent that made my tiny apartment a much happier place.

I knew this past weekend's weather was just a tease so I squeezed every bit of enjoyment out of it. I was invited to Mario and Donald's amazing home in NJ for brunch on Sunday. The food and atmosphere were right out of Martha. They set up a table in the shade with vintage linens and we ate a half dozen glorious salads. Birds were chirping, clean NJ squirrels- not the dirty scary NY breed- were climbing the trees. There are some things NYC just cannot offer.

I watched a great documentary last night on HBO- Le Cirque: A Table in Heaven. It was about Sirio Maccioni, the founder of Le Cirque, and his family. I walk by Le Cirque every day and it was interesting to get an idea of what goes on in there. The best part was watching the dynamic between Mr. Maccioni and his three sons Mario, Marco, and Mauro. They are these really passionate people with conflicting ideas on running the restaurant, yelling at each other in Italian most of the time. At the end, Mr. Maccioni goes to church on his bike, then kind of rides off into the sunset. He's wearing these red pants, a white button down shirt, and this little Gucci tote over his shoulder. He actually looks kind of chic. I sort of want some red pants now.

I went to Momofuku noodle bar last week and I can't stop thinking about ramen. Specifically, chicken ramen with scallions and seaweed in a gloriously salty broth. We also had the steamed pork buns, which they are famous for. If you like grease then they are for you. I had to eat predominantly steamed spinach the following day to counteract the effects.

Jen moved to Park Slope recently, so Sari and I went out there for a little tour of her fave places. We saw the communist food co-op, the bar where she plays trivia, and the place where she's been to Johnny Cash night (was it Johnny Cash?)

She also took us to Sweet Melissa, a great pastry shop with a garden in the back. Looking forward to more Brooklyn adventures!

I went to the Manhattan Vintage Show last weekend at the pier on 55th street. I was looking for wedding things- I was unsuccessful in that endeavor, but I did see lots of great vintage jewelry for everyday and lots of leopard. I have been looking for a leopard coat I think since I was probably 14 years old. I saw this one on Emmanuelle Alt over at The Sartorialist. I am in love with it. It is perfect. And I can't find one similar anywhere. You have to be careful because there is a fine line between Lorraine Bracco in Goodfellas and Kate Moss. I'll keep searching.

The Duane Reade Heart

All I ever want for Valentine's Day is a heart shaped box of chocolates from Duane Reade, CVS, or anywhere this box of Russell Stover goodness is sold. Ask me if I ever get one. Nope. I love the high end stuff from Jacques Torres or Marie Belle, but Valentine's Day calls for something not so serious. Or maybe it's sentimental value; it's what my dad used to get my mom every year. Throw in some Veuve Rose and some Buttercup Bake Shop cupcakes (in the great NYC cupcake debate, I say these win the prize) and you have my perfect Valentine's Day!

John Derian

Off the Bowery on East 2nd Street is John Derian. I swear that from now on any time I need any sort of gift I am going there. It is so well curated, and so full of little treasures. He carries his own line of furniture and decoupage, as well as Hugo Guinness art and some pieces by Leanne Shapton, a very clever and witty illustrator who is one of my favorites. Above is the decoupage tray I was most drawn to (of course!)
After John Derian I walked over to Veniero's, an old school Italian Pastry shop on E. 11th street. They have the best cheesecake in the city, I think. It's been around forever- I don't like to admit how often I went when I briefly lived in the East Village!

I was thrilled to see that Michelle Obama chose Isabel Toledo to design her inauguration ensemble. Isabel Toledo and her husband Ruben are my heroes of the fashion world. Isabel is an incredible designer, and Ruben is the best fashion illustrator of our time. They have a great story. They met as teenagers in NJ and have been collaborating ever since. Actually in High School, she was dating his brother. I learned this little fact and many others when I heard them speak at FIT, which was truly the best lecture I have ever been to. They were as witty and charming as I expected them to be. I even raised my hand and asked Ruben some inane question just to interact with them!

A couple of months ago, I was walking through midtown with Chris, and Isabel and Ruben Toledo walked by us on the sidewalk. I whipped my head around and back to Chris and said "DO YOU KNOW WHO THAT WAS??!" Of course he probably expected me to say it was some actor or some traditional celebrity. But no, I was THAT excited to have a brush with Isabel and Ruben Toledo, who by the way looked impeccable as always.

For my first 'NYC neighborhoods' post I decided to start in the Bowery...that stretch that is sort of Soho/E.Village and 3rd ave but really not. I went to the last day of the Elizabeth Peyton show in the snow on Saturday. I hate to admit it but it was also my first visit to the New Museum!
I was really, really surprised by how small her works are. (That is not a self portrait, sadly I am short! And blond.) I've only seen pics and thought they would be large. I really like her use of color in the paintings (intense greens against sharp reds and lavender), but I prefer her works on paper to her paintings.

Something new

I'm going to try something new that I'm really excited about. Each week I am going to pick an NYC neighborhood and my illustration (or illustrationS) will be based on that neighborhood. I love exploring the city and although I picked a grrrreeeat time to start (rain, wind, cold etc) it will be a fun project!!

I am planning on getting in front of the fire in a few hours and not moving for a couple of days. I'll drink champagne and eat shrimp and worry about it later. I'm so sad I did not get to do all the Christmas posts I had planned on, the season got away from me, and I had some other projects. But I plan on returning full force in the New Year!

I had a GREAT weekend. Had the engagement party at my most faaaavorite restaurant in NYC on 19th street. The dress was a challenge but when I found it- I knew! THEN the shoes were a challenge until I found these...love at first sight! The evening was very red...red shoes...ruby red tuna tartare....and a cranberry cosmo...ALL.DOWN.THE FRONT. OF MY DRESS. And splashed on my shoes! The sheer horror! The dress, amazingly, was salvageable- DvF magical fabric to the rescue again! But my shoes...they will need some resussatation. Still an incredibly magical night.

I've been tagged by The Goods Design, a wonderful blog by an author with impeccable taste in interiors. The objective is to reveal 6 quirky but boring details about myself, so here it goes!1. The Cadbury Creme Egg is my favorite food on earth. Most people are horrified when I reveal this. My mom used to get me 36 packs for Easter. I swear I'm not fat.

2. I am getting married in about one year and one week. This is not quirky or boring, but what is quirky and boring is that Chris and I chose December because we love, love, love the Holidays.

3. I have read every food book under the sun, Reichl, Steingarten, Bourdain, you name it. It's an addiction.
4. My guilty (or not so guilty pleasure) is watching reruns of the Cosby Show on TV Land before I go to bed (Cosby Sweater above). My boyfriend finds this quirky, boring, and bizarre.
5. I have a boat license. Why anyone would permit me, at age 14, a boat license is beyond me- and why anyone would permit me all these years later to have one is still a mystery.

6. I draw lips, eyes, and noses ALL OVER my notes. I have been doing this since junior high, and it seems to be getting worse.

I called my brother, the adventurous eater, earlier this week and asked him if he wanted to get REAL Chinese in Chinatown. Then suddenly it was freezing here in NY, and we got lazy, and decided to meet in Koreatown- that hopping stretch of 32nd street- instead. Here I am, still recovering after about a million shots of Soju! Evil Soju. My brother, having lived in Korea, is a huge fan of Korean BBQ. I just love the set up: a million tiny dishes with all kinds of condiments and pickled everything. Of course, the smoke reaks absolute havoc on your clothing, my coat is still airing out!

I went to the Brooklyn Academy of Music this past weekend for a performance of Amjad. I have not seen many avant-garde dance pieces in my lifetime but I think this one is probably up there! It was great. The building is impressive- it has a cool wavy glass awning on the front. It was downpouring afterwards so we ran across the street to Thomas Biesl for some rose and apple-cranberry crumble.

Top is my little painting of a John Robshaw headboard from Domino, used in designer Fawn Galli's Brooklyn brownstone. I.LOVE.IT. It reminds me of above pages from Mrs. Kennedy Goes Abroad, by Vibhuti Patel, illustrated by Jacqueline Duheme . I must get this book! The illustrations are stunning!

I have been seeing a lot of pink rooms lately. There was a great spread in House Beautiful this month with a few. I would love to paint a room a medium pink, all the trim would be white, and I would throw in a couple of red chairs on a citron striped rug.

When my former roommate and I were poor recent college grads, we lived on three things: popcorn, peanuts in their shells, and the "Red Cheese" as we called it. I don't even know what it was- gouda maybe, but every time my mom came to visit she brought the red cheese, which she lovingly purchased at Costco. We would sit and watch Paradise Hotel on our little TV and eat layer after layer of that thing.

We've since upgraded to higher end cheese purveyors, Artisanal being one of them. It is the only restaurant worth going to in the East 30's (Les Halles too, I think, though I have never been, despite my Anthony Bourdain love.) You leave there smelling like cheese, but it is worth it for the French Onion Soup and the cheese plate, followed by some fondue. Clearly I need to have my cholesterol checked.

Rizzoli on 57th street is my happy place. Whenever I need to be inspired I go there and browse the food and art books and the Children's books. They have the best Children's book section in the city, I think. It is small but it has the most unique selection. Buying a book at Rizzoli feels much better than buying from Barnes and Noble, or any other huge book store.

Fall would not be complete without going up to the Society on a crisp fall day and seeing the original art from all the best Children's books. It is so inspiring for people who are interested in Children's book art.

I went upstairs today to visit my wildly talented and funny coworker and friend Dan. He just got back from Paris and brought back some Macaroons.....my favorite thing on earth. I had what I think was a vanilla bean one- unreal. When I went to Paris a while back, I brought some home in the Laduree boxes above....and polished them ALL off while driving back from the airport on the FDR. I did the above illustration soon after I got back. Now they are decorative objects in my apt (I've seen the black and white box a bazillion times in magazines- it is a stylist's go-to.)

Spain...On the Road Again

I watched the first installment of Mario Batali and Gwyneth Paltrow's Spain...On The Road Again on PBS. I know Mario is overexposed but I love him anyway. They talk a lot about the history of Spain but the real purpose is a culinary road trip.
